4. Tolian Soran - Star Trek: Generations

His Plan: The El Aurian scientist wished to reach an extra-dimensional realm known as the Nexus, which would grant him anything he desired (in this case immortality), but at the cost of destroying several stars and a planet in the process. He didn't seem to much care about that, to be honest.

What Happened?: Soran was thwarted by Captain Jean-Luc Picard at the very last moment, blowing him up with a missile just in time, though unfortunately the final battle did cost the life of the one and only Captain Kirk, who received an unforgivably undignified death-by-bridge.

It's certainly one of the more unique plots to cheat death in the history of cinema, though hopelessly convoluted for all the good it eventually did Soran.
