10 Movie Villains Who Weren't Really Bad

4. Replicants - Blade Runner

If a machine had it's own unique emotions and opinions, is it sentient? This is the dilemma the four replicants struggle with as they discern their new found emotions, whilst trying to find a way to lengthen their lives. When first we of hear Roy Batty and his associates, they've already killed a crew of humans for their ship, painting this picture of machines without a conscience. But as we see these replicants individually, we get a sense there's more humanity in them to what were lead to believe. We can see aspects of fear and anger towards Deckard, for instance, Leon expressing how it feels to be the hunted one, with Deckard representing the tyranny of humanity. It's hard to pass judgement on this new sentient species when they have been outlawed from Earth because of their apparent crimes, and hunted by individuals called blade runners. It is genocide, and the humans are either completely oblivious to the replicants evolution or they chose to ignore it. The replicants are the most misunderstood villains in the films industry, for in their world, they must struggle against the oppressive nature of man, making their questionable choices understandable.
