7. The Skrulls (Captain Marvel)

It's been a long time coming, but in 2019, the Marvel Cinematic Universe will finally introduce the Skrulls, an alien race of shape-shifters. Capable of assuming the appearance of anyone they please, the Skrulls aren't just expected to play a key role in Captain Marvel, but should be important to the future of the MCU as a whole.

Given their stealth-oriented abilities, the Skrulls won't be kicking ass in the traditional sense, but rather, their method of infiltration - slowly destabilise organisations by disguising themselves as key individuals - could see them flip the entire MCU on its head.

Could they morph into Nick Fury? Agent Coulson? Captain Marvel herself? Literally anyone is fair game at this point, and it's a genuinely terrifying thought that some of the characters we've loved for over a decade might have been a green-skinned alien the whole time.

The Skrulls are worthy foes for this reason alone. They don't need muscles, vibranium shields or lightning powers to do some damage: they could pick apart our entire world slowly, methodically, and without anybody even realising. Captain Marvel definitely has her work cut out with this lot.
