2. Sheriff Of Nottingham – Robin Hood Prince Of Thieves (1991)
The Sheriff takes over England while Robin Hood and the Kind are away during the crusades. After murdering Robin’s father when he refuses to join him, he sets his sights on taking the throne by marrying and having a child with Maid Marian.
When Marian nicely refuses to come and live with him, saying she wants to stay in her own home ‘for now’, he gives her a decorative dagger as a sign of his affection for her and telling her it is for her protection.
When Marian first taken to Robin’s camp in the woods, he shows her the riches they had intercepted that were to bribe King Richard’s enemies to unite against him. Feeling embarrassed that her first thought was that he had brought her there to boast, she gives him the Sherriff’s dagger, saying it isn’t important to her. Robin puts it in his belt when her back is turned.
In the final showdown of the film, the Sheriff and Robin fight in the castle and Robin is knocked to the ground. About to be killed, he quickly stabs the Sheriff in the chest, ironically killing him with his own dagger.
