10 Movie Villains You Didn't Realise Actually Won
4. Alex DeLarge - A Clockwork Orange
A fan of Beethoven, drug-laced milk and of course a bit of the old ultra-violence, Alex DeLarge is one of the darkest examples of youth in revolt. Thinking nothing of rape and murder, he and his droogs are seemingly allowed to roam freely and do as they please in their dystopian London. We see his gang attack the homeless, commit sexual assaults and revel in every second of their victim's terror.
This wanton carnage cannot last forever and Alex's past eventually catches up with him. Tortured, conditioned and abandoned by those closest to him, it seems that he has really gotten his comeuppance. It's interesting to see these consequences for the character especially as he's the one narrating the film, his charm able to muster some level of sympathy despite his clear depravity. Flash forward to his hospital bed after surviving a suicide attempt which has been provoked by one of his past victims.
The correctional officers all gather around him (despite having brutalised him previously) and laud him as a success story for the brainwashing programme. Alex plays along and smiles for all of their pictures but the reality of his condition is revealed in his final narration. Nothing has changed; he's still as evil and dangerous as he's ever been.
