10 Movies That Would Actually Benefit From A Remake
8. Hancock (2008)
Is it fair to say that a Will Smith summer blockbuster that grossed almost $625m at the worldwide box office is in need of a remake? Based on the wildly uneven quality of the final product and the potential of the initial script to completely subvert the superhero genre, I would certainly say so. After a promising and hugely entertaining first act, that sees Smith play against both his on-screen persona and the typical superhero as the alcoholic, homeless and unlikeable hero, things become increasingly muddled thanks to a mid-movie twist and the movie's inability to successfully balance the elements of superhero movie, summer blockbuster, dark comedy and family drama that are all going on at once. The final product bears the heavy fingerprints of studio interference, which is unsurprising considering the script (originally titled Tonight, He Comes) was written way back in 1996 and went through numerous rewrites (including one from Vince Gilligan) and passed through Tony Scott, Michael Mann, Jonathan Mostow and Gabriele Muccino before Peter Berg was finally hired to direct. The original script was a much, much darker affair that featured a protagonist unlike any superhero movie ever. Tonight, He Comes didn't just stretch the boundaries of the genre, it smashed them to pieces. It is readily available to read online, and would easily be a hard-R movie and a very uncomfortable watch at some points. However, if it was treated as a dark comedy and given a budget in the $40m range, the result would be an instant cult classic and the ultimate deconstruction of the superhero movie, which would be especially prescient given the number of comic-book adaptations that currently saturate the multiplex.
I don't do social media, so like or follow me in person but please maintain a safe distance or the authorities will be notified. Don't snap me though, I'll probably break. I was once labelled a misogynist on this very site in a twenty paragraph-long rant for daring to speak ill of the Twilight franchise. I stand by what I said, it's crap.
