10 Movies That Almost Had Much Better Endings

8. Audrey II Takes Over The World - Little Shop Of Horrors

Warner Bros. Pictures

The Official Ending: Little Shop Of Horrors, the big screen adaptation of the off-Broadway musical based on a minor 1960 horror comedy, is a pretty solid movie that is more than just another big screen musical. The songs are incredibly catchy, but the real selling point is the incredible puppeteering behind man-eating plant Audrey II. Revealed in the final scenes to be an alien with an eye towards world domination, it's stopped by the dweeby Seymour, who goes on to live somewhere that's green with the human Audrey I.

The One We Almost Got: If the ending, with Audrey II suddenly put down, seems out of the blue that's because it is. The original ending of Frank Oz's movie was going to be the same as the musical, which, putting it succinctly, sees Audrey II succeed in its plan, killing Seymour and, with other monsters made from its cuttings, wreaking havoc across the world. The ending did atrociously in test screenings, with the visually less impressive one we all know replacing it.

Why It Would Have Been Better: In the cut version the reveal of what Audrey II's up is much less overt and the overall effect is much stronger. Sure, it's a downbeat idea, but the execution fits in with the film's zany tone better than the saccharine ending we got.
