10 Movies Critics & Audiences Couldn't Agree On
5. Amsterdam
Snagging a big name or two for a film can do magic when it comes to getting audiences to watch it. Aside from the obvious marketing advantages, many of these names tend to simply make better anything that they are in, but it is not always quite as straightforward as this.
Yes, a strong cast can help, but it doesn't always guarantee success either critically or commercially. Take Amsterdam, a picture that famously flopped when it released in 2022 regardless of a ridiculously stacked billing of Christian Bale, Margot Robbie, John David Washington, Anya Taylor-Joy, Chris Rock, Michael Shannon, Mike Myers, Timothy Olyphant, Zoe Saldana, Rami Malek, and even Robert De Niro.
Audiences seemed to be swayed by the names and talent on show, and it does seem that this kind of cast would almost automatically score some points. However, critically speaking there is far more to a film than its actors.
Though the likes of Bale and Robbie, in particular, made Amsterdam far better than it could have been otherwise, they were unable to mask the confusing and convoluted story being told in a film that couldn't seem to settle on one tone to take.
