10 Movies Everyone Thinks Are Based On A True Story (But Aren't)
4. CODA
The Academy sure loves movies based on true events, and so when CODA surprisingly scooped the Best Picture Oscar earlier this year, there were many who simply assumed that the affecting tale of a woman (Emilia Jones) and her deaf family's struggles was based on a real family.
But not at all - CODA is actually a remake of a 2014 French-Belgian drama, La Famille BĂ©lier, which isn't directly inspired by any real deaf family with a hearing daughter.
This of course doesn't mean that CODA isn't a well-researched piece of work or lacks emotional authenticity, because the response from the deaf and CODA community has largely been overwhelmingly positive.
Yet the film's main narrative thread, of a hearing daughter who aspires to become a singer while attempting to help her deaf family's fishing business - or, in the original, a family farm - is entirely fabricated for the story's dramatic purposes. And that's just fine.
