10 Movies Everyone Thought Were DOOMED (But Became Massive Hits)
2. The Beekeeper
There's something about Jason Statham whooping ass that just forces people to get off of their own and head into a movie theatre.
No matter how dodgy or uninspired the action flick in question may appear, folks seem to still head into their local theatre to hear that familiar grumble and see many a punch and kick unleashed. With that being said, this year's The Beekeeper did look like a film even the most dedicated Statham stan would struggle to justify spending money on a ticket for.
Focusing on Stath's Adam Clay, a retired assassin who reverses said retirement to get revenge following the death of his landlady, the movie's trailers made it seem like just another bland, generic actioner. The fact it was being nudged out into the world during the movie graveyard month that is January also suggested it was a project the folks behind it didn't have too much faith in.
Somehow, though, The Beekeeper not only earned back its budget, the David Ayer-directed thriller with a $40 million budget made a huge $152 million at the box office, proving that not even subpar marketing can keep fans from swarming to theatres to see Statham delivering badass one-liners.
