10 Movies Everyone Thought Were DOOMED (But Became Massive Hits)
1. Twisters
Legacy sequels are certainly having a moment right now.
However, for every awesome return to a cherished franchise or world like Top Gun: Maverick, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, and Creed, there's been an Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, Space Jam: A New Legacy, and Zoolander 2 to remind folks that these movies aren't always guaranteed money-makers.
At a glance, the long-awaited follow-up to 1996's groundbreaking disaster movie Twister appeared set to fall into that latter category for a number of reasons.
Firstly, without any of the famous faces who sat at the centre of that first story - like the late Bill Paxton or Helen Hunt - it would instantly be harder to sell this sequel without the added boost of nostalgia they would have brought. And although the trailers painted the picture of a decent enough trip to the cinema, Twisters did still feel like an unnecessary movie that was just there to lazily squeeze some more money out of those who loved the original. Would anyone outside of those Twister lovers really give a damn about Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones chasing storms, though?
Well, the short and quite surprising answer is yes.
Sure, it didn't earn quite as much as that Jan De Bont-directed first movie, but Twisters still refused to be blown away by Deadpool & Wolverine, brought in a strong £371 million on a $155 million budget, became one of the most talked about blockbusters of the year, and satisfied both fans and critics.
It may have once looked like another doomed legacy sequel set to be added to the pile, but Lee Isaac Chung and the gang ultimately provided an unexpectedly thrilling experience that the world definitely wanted to see.
