10 Movies Franchises That Went From 5 Stars To 1 Star
6. Jaws
5 Star: Jaws 1 Star: Jaws 3; Jaws: The Revenge Jaws tells the story of Martin Brody, the new police chief on an island community being terrorised by a shark. By the end of the film the shark has been blown up and Brody has overcome his fear of the water. The only way the ending could have been more resolute is if we'd seen him and Hooper return to shore to see a big banner made by the islanders exclaiming "We welcome you as one of our own Chief Brody". Jaws doesn't need a sequel and it certainly doesn't need three. But studio execs rarely let necessity, or story logic, influence their decision making and sequels is what it got. And, in the grand tradition of a Hollywood pre-blockbuster, those sequels got steadily worse. Jaws 3 was so concerned with its 3D effects that very little care was put into making the film work. And without the novelty of seeing a cutout of a severed arm fly at the screen (on VHS and DVD the film has been a completely 2D affair) nothing can distract from its ponderous boredom. Even more perplexing is Jaws: The Revenge, which boasts a roaring shark that hunts down the surviving Brody family members over hundreds of miles.
