10 Movies From 2016 That Really Shouldn’t Have Been Boring

9. Independence Day: Resurgence

Wolverine Weapon X
20th Century Fox

Roland Emmerich used to make reliably dumb but entertaining movies before he moved on to just making dumb ones. He was talking up a potential Independence Day sequel for years, so when it finally came together you had to assume he’d found a killer script or idea; you’d assume wrong, friend.

Resurgence is textbook Emmerich with none of the fun. Sure there’s a lot of destruction and CG crap flying around, but his creativity with chaos has diminished over the years. The new cast – including the Liam "Interesting" Hemsworth – are insanely bland, and the returning cast just goes through the motions. Goldblum is always worth waiting, but boy is this far from his best work.

There was hope Resurgence would be a return to the cheesy fun that comes with a silly disaster movie, but this isn’t the movie to resurrect that ailing genre.

Handsome. Charismatic. Intelligent. Noble. Witty. I'm none of these things, but I'm a half decent writer, I guess.
