Once again, a big studio decides to reboot a TV show most people have never heard of as a comedy and once again, it flounders at the box office. Worldwide, CHIPS (or CHiPs, if you prefer) made only $25 million, which would’ve seen it branded as a colossal failure if it hadn’t cost a similar amount to make.

Like Worst Picture nominee Baywatch, it’s another R-rated comedy with (according to the MPAA) “crude sexual content, graphic nudity, pervasive language, some violence and drug use.” It’s content to coast along on the charisma of its stars. It has no reason to exist.

“CHIPS is a miserable movie,” claimed the Arizona Republic, “an exercise in stupidity that takes whatever nostalgia one had for the late 1970s television series – this assumes anyone actually had nostalgia for it – and beats it to death on a bed of idiocy.”
