10 Movies From 2017 That Died At The US Box Office
6. King Arthur: Legend Of The Sword
US Box Office: $38,588,717
The last time a gritty reimagining of the Arthurian legend appeared in multiplexes, back in 2003, the movie made only $51 million in the US. King Arthur’s cast included Clive Owen, Keira Knightley and Stellan Skarsgard, director Antoine Fuqua had previously enjoyed success with Training Day and the movie was produced by blockbuster supremo Jerry Bruckheimer, all of whom were left wondering what went wrong.
Jump forward 14 summers and Guy Ritchie’s King Arthur: Legend Of The Sword, which stars Charlie Hunnam, Jude Law and Eric Bana, stunned Hollywood’s bean counters by performing even worse than its distant relative. This time, however, there was no shortage of explanations for the picture’s underwhelming box office takings.
Stuck in development hell for several years, the movie failed to attract A-list stars who might’ve broken through audience apathy. By the time King Arthur was unleashed, the audience for sword and sandal epics had been sated by Game Of Thrones, and big screen reboots like the previous summer’s Ben Hur were wilting at the box office.
Throw in a release date between Guardians Of The Galaxy 2 and Alien: Covenant and you have a movie that was dead on arrival.
