As you may have guessed, Monster Trucks is a movie about monsters. That live in trucks. Aimed squarely at pre-adolescent males, it’s kind of like the Saturday morning TV equivalent of Maximum Overdrive.

Released by Paramount, the studio behind the Transformers franchise, and directed by Ice Age’s Chris Wedge, the movie is basically a lot of elements that don’t really fit together and mostly come across as odd. It’s sort of a live action cartoon and sort of a pre-teen Fast & Furious and sort of an effects comedy in the vein of The Love Bug.

If it wasn’t so mild (and gave an interesting supporting cast that includes Amy Ryan and Rob Lowe), Monster Trucks would be a shoo-in for cult status. Poor word of mouth meant it flopped theatrically, taking barely half its $125 million budget worldwide, but there are worse films to watch with the kids.
