10 Movies In 2017 That Should Have Flopped (But Didn't)

5. The Beguiled

Box Office: $27.7 million

Director Sofia Coppola isn't exactly known for lighting up the box office, and of her five theatrically-released films prior to The Beguiled, only two had managed to actually double their budget.

Even with the likes of Colin Farrell, Nicole Kidman and Kirsten Dunst starring, the marketing for The Beguiled suggested low commercial prospects for the film, proposing a dry, slow-moving drama that mainstream audiences would dismiss as "boring".

Surprising it is, then, that in terms of budget-to-profit ratio, The Beguiled is actually Coppola's most successful film since Lost in Translation, almost tripling its sensibly scant $10 million budget, which given its unassuming presence and low-key construction, is pretty damn great.

It wouldn't have surprised anyone if this one didn't even make its budget back, so scoring almost $30 million is veritable gangbusters for the director.
