10 Movies Nobody Asked For (That Might Be Great)

5. The Exorcist Reboot

Given that the Exorcist franchise has produced precisely two great movies (the William Friedkin original and the William Peter Blatty-directed The Exorcist III) and nothing but wall-to-wall duds for the last 20 years, you can't blame fans for being exhausted with the whole enterprise.

Some stories just weren't built for the franchise treatment, with the failure of last year's wretched The Exorcist: Believer seemingly putting the final nail in the series' coffin.

Though Believer's critical and commercial underperformance caused a planned trilogy to be cancelled, earlier this year Universal announced that they were wiping the slate clean and developing an Exorcist reboot.

Easy though it would've been to groan at such a prospect, the studio had a major ace up their sleeve by revealing that they'd hired the great Mike Flanagan (Hush, Doctor Sleep, The Haunting of Hill House) to write and direct the new film.

Given Flanagan's exceptional achievements in the horror genre on screens big and small over the last decade-plus, it's easy to believe that he'll do something interesting with The Exorcist rather than simply listlessly rehash what came before.

Flanagan's penchant for character-driven thrills should ensure that this wipes the floor with the last two decades of thoroughly naff Exorcist prequels and sequels.
