10 Movies Not Screened For Critics (That Were Actually Good)
8. Æon Flux
This 2005 movie isn't without its flaws, and fans of the original MTV animation are likely to be disppointed if they go in expecting the same level of creativity, but it deserved a better release and a better reception.
It's the year 2415 and what remains of humanity lives in a gorgeous domed dystopia in the middle of the jungle, something like a grown-up Teletubbies set. Everyone is beautiful and everyone dresses beautifully. Charlize Theron is a knockout as the titular assassin. She pouts at Marton Csokas. He pouts back. Jonny Lee Miller is in the background, pouting. It's like Milan fashion week with guns.
There are also some highly inventive touches which set it apart from standard sci-fi fare, with the emphasis on bio-engineered technology giving the whole thing a very refreshing and distinctive feel. Seed pods act as gun turrets, information is shared through viral infections, guns spit barbed projectiles.
It might not be the greatest film, and it takes itself a touch more seriously than it should, but in its best moments it looks and feels like a beautiful fever-dream.
