10 Movies Roger Ebert Loved That Everyone Else Hated

7. Anaconda (3.5 stars)

AnacondaEbert Quote: "Anaconda is an example of one of the hardest kinds of films to make well: a superior mass-audience entertainment. It has the effects and the thrills, but it also has big laughs, quirky dialogue and a gruesome imagination." Critical Consensus: 38% Anaconda might have been a passable flick when I was about 10 years old, but as an adult, I just can't hack it; it's a terrible Jaws-esque yarn without the same sense of tension or the brilliant characters. The effects also dated pretty quickly after release, and as a result I struggle to see what Ebert saw in the film. Sure, the cheesy appeal is good for a few chuckles, but it's a pretty damn low-rent horror flick, and not one I would recommend to anyone but drunk, bored people on a Friday night. Roger must have a weakness for the series; he gave the even worse sequel, Anacondas: Hunt for the Blood Orchid, a shockingly generous 2 stars (it has 26% on Rotten Tomatoes).
