10 Movies So Awful They Were Pulled From Theatres

4. Honky Tonk Freeway (1981)

Scottish filmmaker Don Boyd came up with the ridiculous idea of an ensemble comedy about the residents of a Florida town who want the governor to build a freeway exit to the town's safari attraction.

Stuffed with actors who probably had better things to do - including Beau Bridges, Beverly D'Angelo, Geraldine Page, and a pre-Christmas Story Peter Billingsley - Honky Tonk Freeway cost an absurd $24 million, which included paying a town to paint most of its buildings pink and hiring a water-skiing elephant named Bubbles.

Even director John Schlesinger, who had won an Oscar just a decade earlier for Midnight Cowboy, couldn't make the film work.

Few people cared about a movie about wacky townsfolk and highway construction. Amid shady rights deals that complicated the movie's release, Honky Tonk Freeway was removed from U.S. theatres after grossing just $2 million in 629 theatres in one week. At the time, it was one of the biggest bombs ever.
