Ryan Coogler's Creed is one hell of a boxing movie, with some even arguing that it was as good if not better than Rocky itself.

It's an impressive achievement when you consider that pretty much every review of Creed referred to it as a not-so-loose remake of Rocky, with Michael B. Jordan assuming the underdog boxer part, while Sylvester Stallone slid effortlessly into the weathered trainer role.

Though Adonis Creed (Jordan) and Rocky Balboa (Stallone) have their obvious differences, Creed doesn't do much to paint outside the box and fulfils most of the expected plot beats, namely having the protagonist lose the final fight but earn everyone's respect in the process.

The trailers quite eagerly leaned into the similarities between Creed and Rocky, enough that many assumed the film would surely end with Creed actually winning his fight.

But Coogler's film understood how effective the basic, familiar goods could be when executed with real panache, and so Creed scored rave reviews - and even an Oscar nomination for a never-better Stallone - regardless.
