9. Days of Thunder 2
Within a nanosecond of Top Gun: Maverick blowing up at the box office, many began to speculate whether another certain high-octane, Tony Scott-directed, Tom Cruise-starring action flick might get the legacy sequel treatment.
And that film, of course, is Days of Thunder - the glossy NASCAR blockbuster which was a solid box office hit despite being indifferently received by critics.
Days of Thunder 2 seemed like the logical next step, then, after Maverick reaffirmed the four-quadrant appeal of Tom Cruise doing death-defying things in fast vehicles. But only last November did Paramount finally announce that Cruise was in talks to star in a Days of Thunder sequel, and given that the original film was released in 1990, it'll actually outdo the 36-year gap between Top Gun and Maverick.
Though Cruise has plenty on his plate with Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning, a new film with Alejandro G. Iñárritu, and a third Top Gun on the way, this one seems damn-sure to happen in the near-future.
It's probably fair to assume that Nicole Kidman won't be back, though.
