10 Movies That Are Still Great After Twenty Viewings
6. The Wizard Of Oz
Some movies are so packed with instances of "iconic" that it's hard to know where to start: The Wizard of Oz is one of such movies, a notion instantly proven through endless TV networks' insistence on playing it year after year over the course of the Christmas holidays. And why not?
People actually want to see The Wizard of Oz over and over, because The Wizard of Oz is awesome in every way: this seemingly simple tale, with its memorable songs, characters and quotes has, after all, inspired, entertained and enamoured folk for over 75 years - no minor feat. Not only is The Wizard of Oz made up of great scene after great scene, not to mention that famous switch between the sepia-soaked dustbowl that is Kansas and the Technicoloured marvel of Oz, Victor Fleming's flick remains undeniably watchable for one reason: innocence.
It is almost parable-like in its telling of Dorothy Gale and her fight to return home to the place she detested for so long, but the picture also clings to a sense of the old that is never anything but comforting. One could certainly argue that no other movie in the history of the medium has the power to "cheer up" all who lays eyes upon it as fast as The Wizard of Oz does. Here's to this year's Christmas TV schedule; no doubt it will be back. And rightly so.
