10 Movies That Are Still Stuck In Development Hell
2. The Sandman
Neil Gaiman's popular comic series The Sandman ran from 1989 to 1996 and was one of the most successful graphic novels of its time. Film and TV adaptations of the series have been in the works on multiple occasions, but none have ever made it all the way to our screens.
Warner Bros. spent much of the 90s trying to make a film happen, with Roger Avary attached as the director but eventually being fired due to disputes with production. Several writers and script ideas came and went, and Gaiman himself was at one point so frustrated by the process he gave up writing about the characters for a time.
At the turn of the millennium, Gaiman was still open to the idea of a film adaptation but wanted someone with genuine passion to take over the project, citing Terry Gilliam as a possible director. David Goyer eventually got involved and Joseph Gordon-Levitt was pitched to star in the picture.
Gaiman seemed keen and said that the film was coming along nicely, but more issues started to plague production and another script rewrite was needed. Then, in March of 2016, Gordon-Levitt dropped out. Eric Heisserer, who was hired to rewrite the script, also left the production and said he thought the story would be better off as a TV series.
