10 Movies That Broke Promises To Fans

2. Benedict Cumberbatch DEFINITELY Isn't Khan - Star Trek Into Darkness

Shortly after Benedict Cumberbatch was cast as Star Trek Into Darkness' unnamed villain, rumours began to circulate that he would be playing a new version of classic Trek antagonist Khan Noonien Singh, as played so memorably by Ricardo Montalbán in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.

This news surfaced roughly a year before the movie's release, prompting J.J. Abrams to flatly deny Cumberbatch was playing Khan, while the film's marketing suggested he was in fact an entirely different villain called John Harrison.

But fans were convinced the famously enigma-happy Abrams was once again trying to dupe fans with his "mystery box," and so when the film eventually hit cinemas, there were collective groans and slow-claps as, yes, Cumberbatch was revealed to be Khan.

Abrams himself admitted following the film's release that he should've just been upfront about Cumberbatch's role, given how the intense denials from him and the cast simply left fans more aggravated when the truth was confirmed.

As entertaining as Cumberbatch's performance in the movie is, he never really quite feels like Khan, does he? Like pretty much all of the other nods to The Wrath of Khan in the film, it comes off as rather hollow and cynical.
