One of the crowning achievements of cinematic genius Stanley Kubrick, and easily one of the greatest films ever made, A Clockwork Orange nevertheless caused immense controversy when Kubrick unleashed on the masses. Receiving an X-rating in the USA, the film proved even more controversial in the United Kingdom: Kubrick chose to pull his own film from UK theatres when the press claimed that it inspired a copycat sexual assault. Though today's audiences may find the film less shocking than modern examples of extreme cinema, its power to disturb and provoke thought remains as powerful as ever. Even if these films appear quaint by today's standards they pushed the cinematic envelope and secured their legacy as touchstones of controversy. What other films do you think deserve to be on the list? Let me know in the comments below.
