10 Movies That Changed The Genre They Were Made In

1. The Good, The Bad And The Ugly

This entry could have been devoted the Dollars Trilogy (A Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More, The Good, The Bad and The Ugly) as a whole. This film pretty much represents all three since it embodies the best aspects of each. You have Clint Eastwood's steely Man With No Name character at his most well defined, Sergio Leone's kinetic direction and one of Ennio Morricone's most memorable scores.

The Western was one of the most popular genres in America throughout the middle of the twentieth century. These films were popular in their time in the same way that comic book movies are today. American Westerns in particular had their own set template and themes of law and order in a lawless world that gave them such large pop appeal.

Directors like Sergio Leone and Sergio Corbucci began to experiment with the genre to reinvent it as the Spaghetti Western. As the title suggests, these were European made films about the American Old West. Where Leone and Eastwood altered the genre most notably is in the way they broke from the traditional Western hero.

In their Spaghetti Westerns The Man With No Name isn't out to right a wrong or conquer his environment. He is simply a wanderer whose sense of justice isn't black and white.

My favorite movies are Before Sunrise, Pulp Fiction, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Alien and Her so don't be surprised to see those pop up in my writing from time to time. I'm currently in school for Journalism/English and I have an obsession with all things cinematic on the side.
