Throughout the movie, Aubrey Plazas Darius Britt and her journalist colleagues have been mocking Mark Duplass character Kenneth. Little does he know, but Darius only replied to Kenneth's Wanted: Somebody to go back in time with me classified ad to get a comedic article out of it. All the way, even as the two become friends, were not meant to believe that he actually has a time machine. For 99% of its running time, Colin Trevorrows Safety Not Guaranteed is an indie comedy about two unlikely acquaintances becoming close friends. Right at the end it has a massive genre swap, though, becoming a hard sci-fi movie with an actual time machine, and providing a euphoric conclusion to the story in the process.
