10 Movies That Could Be The Big Surprise Hit Of 2016

3. Sing Street

What Is It? Another music-driven story from a director who's shown real adeptness in that area in the past, Sing Street sees Once's John Carney return to Ireland for an eighties-set story of childhood romance, with schoolboys starting a band to impress a girl. Expect something heart-achingly universal. Also, because it's an Irish movie, Aiden Gillan pops up. Will It Be Good? Early reports are not just that it's good, but amazing, which means the biggest potential sticklers for the movie probably isn't an issue; period movies infused with that era's music can sometimes be a bit cloying, evoking a facsimile of the past rather than recreating it, and we all know how iffy child actors can. Grounding all that by having it be about the music no doubt helps. But Will It Be A Hit? We've already seen Carney have a breakout hit before with Once, and signs point towards Sing Street going even bigger. It had a momentous reaction in Sundance that'll carry it nicely to its release. A feel-good movie that rides on nostalgia for eighties music? That's got all the makings of a success.
