Thanks to the prequel trilogy, Star Wars fans now know alot more about how the Jedi Knights of the Old Republic lived and operated, and about the inflexible hierarchical structure that maintained the order.

The Jedi Knights were an institution, like the Catholic Church: rigid and calcified, treating tradition as law because they’d been around for thousands of years. But the Catholic Church began as small groups of people meeting in secret in each others’ houses. How did the Jedi Knights begin?

What was the galaxy of the Star Wars universe like 5,000 years ago? How did the Jedi come together? The first Sith was a rogue Jedi who brought about the Hundred Year Darkness, recruiting others to his cause - who was that Jedi?

A spinoff that details some of the rich history of the Star Wars universe, specifically as it relates to the Jedi and the emergence of those that tap into the dark side of the Force - that’s some proper Lord Of The Rings style storytelling, mythic and compelling, and a counterpoint to the character-driven narrative of the main Star Wars saga.

Star Wars has always flirted with that kind of world-building structure without actually committing to the grand, operatic scale it would require: but cinema audiences are a lot more used to this kind of thing now. A film that opened up the very beginnings of the world these characters move in today: that’s context any Star Wars can would appreciate.

What do you think the next spinoff film will be? Share you suggestions down in the comments.
