10 Movies That DELIBERATELY Didn't Give Fans What They Wanted

5. Only God Forgives

When Nicolas Winding Refn announced that he would be following up his smash hit action drama Drive with a Thai-set revenge thriller called Only God Forgives, also starring Ryan Gosling, many assumed it'd basically be Drive 2.0: Thailand Edition.

The high-octane trailers certainly suggested as much, painting another moody action-thriller as only Refn could deliver.

And so, audiences struggled to know what to do with the end result: a slow, surreal, ambiguous character drama with only minimal bursts of violent action.

It's a film languorous enough to make Drive seem fast-paced, its experimental, opaque storytelling and vague characterisation proving a far cry from the muscular action flick many had been sold on.

The film's favour has grown somewhat in recent years, though there are still many who remain disappointed that it didn't deliver the gonzo action it proffered on the tin.
