10 Movies That DELIBERATELY Didn't Give Fans What They Wanted

4. Under The Skin

Regrettably, Jonathan Glazer's brilliant sci-fi horror film Under the Skin was marketed to casual observers as "the one where Scarlett Johansson gets naked."

This invited expectations that it was basically a new take on Species, with Johansson playing an alien who uses her attractive human form to devour men.

And though the basics of the story aren't entirely dissimilar, the execution absolutely is. This isn't sexy schlock in the vein of Species: it's a deeply unsettling, ultra-atmospheric slice of sci-fi horror that renders even the site of a nude Johansson disconcerting.

Between the lack of titillation on offer, the surreal visuals, and generally nebulous storytelling, it's little surprise that those who tuned in expecting instant-gratification trash were left totally baffled.

As a result it was also no shock that Under the Skin bombed catastrophically at the box office, though was well-received by critics and remains a much-loved cult classic almost a decade on.
