10 Movies That Didn't Understand What The Fans Wanted
7. Alien: Covenant
As brilliant a filmmaker a Ridley Scott has proven himself to be, Alien: Covenant was sure confirmation that he has no idea what to do with the Alien franchise anymore, nor does he realise what fans actually want.
Following the divisive response to Prometheus, Scott took away the message that fans wanted to see the xenomorph again, and reshaped the planned Prometheus sequel into a more direct Alien-centric film.
And so, Alien: Covenant quickly bombed the Engineers out of the franchise, dished up another fleet of idiotic human charactser, needlessly killed Elizabeth Shaw (Noomi Rapace) off-screen, over-explained the origins of the xenomorph and, yes, served up a few dodgy CGI xenos in the third act.
The only particularly interesting thing Covenant gave fans was two Michael Fassbenders for the price of one - with some giggle-worthy homo-eroticism in the bargain.
The vast majority of the fanbase wanted to see a sequel where Shaw, the only truly likeable character from Prometheus, headed to the Engineer homeworld to find out why they were so keen to destroy humanity.
But presumably fearing a tragic box office following the response to Prometheus, Scott chickened out and returned to the tired Alien well once again, which ironically led to the film grossing barely half of what Prometheus did.
