10 Movies That Fixed Infamous Plot Holes
7. Aladdin - The Cave Of Wonders And How Wishes Are Made
For 2019’s Aladdin remake, Disney had even more to clean up. Namely, in the 27 years between original and remake, a lot had changed in terms of political correctness.
This time around they ousted many of the not-so-subtle racial stereotypes as well as a casual mention of slavery as if it were a good thing (which sidesteps time period accuracy to favor contemporary worldview). Disney made sure to cast more appropriate actors, whereas the original voice actors were mostly white, they even added more female characters, and gave Princess Jasmine a more proactive role.
One of the biggest mistakes people have called attention to over the years is that when Aladdin goes into the Cave of Wonders, Jafar tells him to “touch nothing but the lamp,” but if Aladdin really couldn’t touch anything, then what about the ground his feet were touching as he walked through the room? In the remake, the line is amended to “bring me nothing but the lamp.”
Also because people bickered about how many times exactly did Aladdin actually make wishes in the original, in the new version the Genie’s rules changed so that the wish-maker has to rub the lamp each time a wish is made, so that the number of wishes Aladdin makes would be absolutely concrete and not up for debate. Thanks for clearing those things up, Disney. Now we can all sleep easier at night.
