10 Movies That Gave Away The Spoiler Immediately
9. Me And Earl And The Dying Girl (2015)
Adapted, as so many good things are, from a novel (by Jesse Andrews), Me And Earl And The Dying Girl proved a surprise hit for 2015 that is still gradually snaking its way into the mainstream today.
The film stars Thomas Mann, RJ Cyler and Olivia Cooke as the titular trio (Greg, Earl and Rachel), who come together through the shared trials of youth and shared love of popular cinema. It opens on Greg at home, in front of a black word document and, after a couple of minutes playing with the common language of cinema in voiceover, and some idiosyncratic claymation, he stops messing about and delivers the line, 'This is the story of my senior year of high school and how it destroyed my life, and how I made a film so bad it literally killed someone.'
Okay, so the homemade movie he makes for Rachel doesn't literally kill her, but she does fall into a coma and die after watching it, and the time and effort Greg puts into making it tanks his grades in school and ruins his friendship with Earl. As a result, Me And Earl And The Dying Girl is one of those few films that tells us what to expect but which we nonetheless resent when it comes true.
