10 Movies That Judged You At The End

6. God Bless America

Memories of murder
Magnolia Pictures

God Bless America is a movie entirely concerned with judging the moronic state of modern society and the viewer's own complicity in that. But filmmaker Bobcat Goldthwait saves his most savage indictment of the audience for the very end.

The film follows a middle-aged man, Frank (Joel Murray), and a teenage girl, Roxy (Tara Lynne Barr), who embark on a killing spree against everyone they perceive as indicative of the decline of American culture - spoiled teenagers, kids talking in the cinema, people who double-park their cars, far-right protestors, and so on.

The story climaxes with Frank breaking into an American Idol-esque reality TV show, American Dreamz, where he kills several audience members and holds everyone in the studio hostage.

Now joined by Roxy, Frank then hijacks the live TV broadcast, speaking directly into the camera as he asks the "audience" to consider who they are within a modern America keen to reward the dumbest and meanest in society.

As the camera zooms in close on Frank's face, he tells us, "We've lost our kindness. We've lost our soul," and it's clear that we're not really watching Frank talking to the show's viewers anymore - the fourth wall has slipped away and writer-director Goldthwait is begging all of us to be better.

To hammer the point home, Frank and Roxy then open fire on everyone in the studio as the police return fire, killing them. The End.
