10 Movies That Judged You At The End
4. Funny Games
In fairness, Michael Haneke's thriller Funny Games - and its 2007 English-language remake, which he also directed - are entirely concerned with judging the audience from start to finish.
The film depicts a family who are tortured by home invaders, and Haneke spends most of the movie doing the exact opposite of what you'd expect, from blaring loud heavy metal music totally out of nowhere, to literally having one of the attackers grab a remote control and rewind the action when things don't go their way.
It's a movie that wants to make you feel bad for getting your kicks from the misery of others, and Haneke caps this off quite perfectly at the very end.
Though we expect to see the family turn the tables on their assailants, it never happens, the film instead ending with them killing the final surviving member of the family and casually getting on with their day.
In the final scene, one of the killers, Paul (Arno Frisch), knocks on the neighbour's door, where it's implied the pair will repeat the same crimes. At that moment, Paul turns to the camera, knowingly staring at the audience as Haneke freezes the image and plays more of that ear-assaulting metal music.
Haneke holds this shot, complete with the discordant music, for almost an entire minute before finally, mercifully cutting to the end credits.
It's the cinematic equivalent of Haneke grabbing the viewer by the collar and mockingly screaming at them, "What? You thought the family were gonna fight back and win? Are you entertained now?"
