10 Movies That Judged You At The End

3. The Wolf Of Wall Street

Memories of murder
Universal

Though The Wolf of Wall Street was roundly praised by critics and netted five Oscar nominations, the discourse surrounding the movie was dominated by debating whether or not Martin Scorsese's film excessively lionised charismatic fraudster Jordan Belfort (Leonardo DiCaprio).

But really, it's all summed in that unforgettable final scene, where Belfort is released from prison and starts a new career as a seminar speaker teaching sales techniques.

Belfort enters the stage to a rowdy round of applause and immediately asks several audience members to try and sell him a pen. After they make their haphazard attempts, Scorsese fades out the sound and dollies the camera across the awe-struck seminar attendees.

As they stare at Jordan with an almost religious appreciation, clearly hanging on everything he's saying, Scorsese is holding a mirror up to the movie's audience themselves, to make them consider whether their own fascination with Belfort might just be a little bit problematic.

Scorsese basically gets to have his cake and eat it too considering that The Wolf of Wall Street is also a terrifically entertaining film about excess and greed, but in those final moments, he assuredly stops to make us question why we're so transfixed by this man.
