Daniel Day-Lewis is without question one of cinema's most versatile and critically applauded actors. Known for his intense method acting techniques and seamless ability to disappear into every one of his characters, he has a relatively small filmography given his impeccable reputation.

From movies such as My Left Foot (1989), Gangs of New York (2002) and There Will Be Blood (2007), Day-Lewis' talent is close to immeasurable and his passion throughout his career seemed endless.

It came as a shock, then, when in 2017 he announced his retirement. He had just completed work on his final movie, Phantom Thread, for which he received mass critical acclaim. A few months after the announcement, he gave a reason for his retirement, claiming that the role had left him with a deep sense of sadness, and he didn't think he could continue making movies.

For the role, Day-Lewis learned how to design dresses (like his character), and fell completely into the role as he always did.

After making the film, the actor's sadness left him disillusioned about his work and without passion to continue. His decision to leave Hollywood meant moviegoers lost one of their greatest chameleons.
