Gene Hackman is one of cinema's most iconic and successful actors, appearing in verified classics such as Bonnie and Clyde (1967), The French Connection (1971), The Conversation (1974) and Reds (1981), winning two Academy Awards along the way.

Hackman's final role came in 2004's comedy Welcome To Mooseport, a film which received overwhelming negative reviews and ended up being a lackluster end to an otherwise staggering career.

According to reports, the actor began to get unhappy with his career after starring in The Royal Tenenbaums (2001) - a film he apparently never wanted a part of - and that the failure of Mooseport confirmed for the actor that his career was done.

Although he didn't announce his retirement right away, he stepped back from the public eye and began a new career as a writer. During promotion for his third novel in 2008, he officially declared his retirement and admitted that his career had just come to a natural end.
