10 Movies That Made You Most Question Your Own Reality

10. Blade Runner (1982)

Ridley Scott's dystopian sci-fi operates on numerous levels, exploring a range of issues including globalisation, religion and the impact of industrialization on the environment. However, since its release thirty years ago, the one aspect of the film that has generated the most discussion is whether the protagonist Rick Deckard is a replicant or not. In the world of Blade Runner, replicants are bioengineered androids who are virtually identical to humans except for a few enhancements. The only way to identify a replicant is through a series of questions that are designed to reveal a lack of empathy in their responses. This fictional Voight-Kampff Test becomes an integral plot device as Deckard's job is to hunt down rogue replicants and 'retire' them. Since its initial release, numerous cuts of Blade Runner have surfaced and each sheds a new light on the possibility that Deckard himself may be as artificial as the replicants he hunts. Director Ridley Scott states that Deckard is indeed a replicant, but Harrison Ford claims that Scott confirmed his character was human while filming on set. If you start dreaming of unicorns and then find origami unicorns around your house, don't panic. Just find someone you trust to check you out with the Voight-Kampff Test. And if you fail? Keep it to yourself.
