As recently as December, Disney were predicting an opening weekend of just $75m for the upcoming Black Panther. Instead, Ryan Coogler's first foray into the Marvel Cinematic Universe captured the zeitgeist and dominated the conversation like no other comic book movie ever has, with months of hype turning the release of the superhero blockbuster into a bona fide cultural event.
To put things in perspective, after only a little over two weeks in theaters Black Panther has earned more money at the box office than Justice League, Man of Steel, Logan, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and Captain America: The Winter Soldier managed during their entire theatrical runs, and it shows no signs of slowing down either.
The movie's $202m domestic debut was the fifth biggest in history and it has held incredibly well, smashing numerous records in the process in a clear signal that this thing will have some serious legs. In fact, Black Panther is currently outpacing the performance of The Avengers at the box office and that became the third highest-grossing movie of all time. When the dust settles, Black Panther might just be the most lucrative movie that Marvel Studios have ever produced.
