10 Movies That Massively Over-Performed At The Box Office
3. Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle
As mentioned previously in this article, nostalgia is a powerful marketing tool in Hollywood these days, but works best when a fresh spin is put on the formula. No movie in recent years that isn't named Star Wars has demonstrated this better than Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, a sequel that was written off by many following some underwhelming promotional footage.
Robin Williams' 1995 original has a special place in the hearts of many, and was a decent-sized box office hit at the time as it earned a solid $262.8m. Based on the mixed reactions for the concept, casting and trailers to the sequel, many were predicting similar numbers for the Dwayne Johnson-led follow-up. How wrong they were.
To put it mildly, Jumanji was the hit of 2017's holiday season. The movie's $36.1m opening wasn't even good enough to take first place at the domestic box office, but it remained in the top ten for an incredible fourteen weeks on its way to becoming the fifth-biggest hit of the year in the United States. Worldwide, it occupied the exact same position thanks to a jaw-dropping final of take of $922m, blowing even the most far-fetched of pre-release predictions out of the water.
