The Jurassic Park franchise had seemingly gone out with a whimper in the early part of the 21st Century. Steven Spielberg's classic original may have been the biggest movie in history and a benchmark in blockbuster cinema when it was released but to put it mildly, the sequels suffered so badly from the law of diminishing returns that the series remained mired in development hell for over a decade.

Jurassic World was treated with cautious optimism thanks to the narrative featuring a fully-functioning park and the presence of a talented ensemble cast, but if anybody claims to have guessed that it would destroy box office records left and center on its way to becoming the highest-grossing movie in history that wasn't directed by James Cameron, then they're a liar.

The list of records broken by Colin Trevorrow's blockbuster were nothing short of remarkable; it scored the highest opening weekend in history both domestically and internationally on both regular screens and IMAX theaters and hit the billion-dollar mark in just thirteen days en route to a box office total of $1.672bn that brought the long-dormant franchise roaring back to the forefront of the public consciousness in spectacular fashion.

And just think; thanks to Star Wars: The Force Awakens, it wasn't even the biggest hit of 2015.

I don't do social media, so like or follow me in person but please maintain a safe distance or the authorities will be notified. Don't snap me though, I'll probably break. I was once labelled a misogynist on this very site in a twenty paragraph-long rant for daring to speak ill of the Twilight franchise. I stand by what I said, it's crap.
