It’s nothing new in the industry for a movie to be incredibly hyped before release, only to completely underwhelm both commercially and with audiences once it hits cinemas the world over. Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets was just one more to add to this particularly long list.

While the film lived up to its promise of stunning visuals, it was more than let down by a sub-par storyline that left too much to be desired, a weak or at best misplaced cast, and an obnoxiously long run time. It even started out in fantastic fashion, which ultimately only made the rest of the movie all the more disappointing.

The opening minutes, to the backing of David Bowie’s Space Oddity, was a montage of how the city of a thousand planets was built to begin with. Starting back in 1975, it showed astronauts of different creeds and races coming together and uniting, eventually expanding to all manner of alien creatures, all flying under one banner.

It was a beautiful set-up, it told a powerful story that feels as though it becomes more and more relevant each day, even without the need for any dialogue, and it genuinely would have made for a better movie than what was ultimately produced.
