There are so many trademarks of Disney animated movies. From the annoyingly catchy songs of Under the Sea, Let it Go, You’re Welcome’s ilk, to the princess-based stories and general family-friendly fun, there are more than a few ways to know that you’re watching a Disney movie.

What the studio did with its Pixar branch, however, was create something different. With very few exceptions, all movies under this particular umbrella have at least some element of emotion and heartbreak. In some cases, it is the main theme throughout the entire thing, rendering 'heartbreak' the understatement of the year.

In this regard, the opening to Up is truly, truly devastating. Everyone knows that Pixar is likely to make you cry, and that Disney in general isn't afraid of killing off characters, but no one saw this coming, particularly not so early on.

The montage of Carl’s blissfully happy life with Ellie, ending with her tragic death is infamously one of the darkest opening scenes in cinematic history, and while the subsequent story is uplifting and lovely, nothing can compare with the emotion brought about immediately.
