The Twist We Got

2010's A Nightmare on Elm Street remake actually restores an aspect of Wes Craven's original concept for the character which was ultimately abandoned, that rather than being a serial killer, Freddy Krueger (Jackie Earle Haley) was a child molester.

Later in the film the remake suggests the possibility of Freddy being innocent, before whipping back around and confirming that - surprise! - he was indeed guilty as charged.

The Twist We Wanted

Yet shortly after the film's release, co-writer Eric Heisserer confirmed that his original version of the script featured a jaw-dropping third act twist, that Freddy was indeed an innocent man tracked down and burned to death by an angry, illogical lynch mob.

The notion of a collective of emotional parents creating the very monster they thought they saw in their midst is certainly fascinating, and while it'd make for an incredibly tough sell in today's climate, back in 2010 it would've lent Freddy a truly unique reinvention.

Instead, we got a half-assed suggestion that Freddy might be innocent, before quickly circling back to predictable business as usual.
