10 Movies That Prove Fanboys Should Never Get What They Want
6. They'll Keep Coming Back Even If The Movies Suck - The Amazing Spider-Man 2
Brand loyalty is a great thing...if you're a movie studio, though not necessarily so much if you're a consumer, because it will essentially mean that you'll throw your money at a given property no matter how terrible the movies are. The most outrageous example in recent memory is the whole Spider-Man franchise debacle, in which Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire walked away from a fourth Spider-Man movie, and as such it was rebooted with Marc Webb directing and Andrew Garfield starring. Fans, curious to see what the new take would be like, flocked to see 2012's The Amazing Spider-Man, which grossed an impressive $757 million, even though it was a warmed-over quasi-remake that squandered a huge opportunity to do something different. Despite the negative reception among fans (and fanboys in particular) for the first film, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 still grossed $706 million, and though most of this will have come from the casual viewer-base, it's clear that even when fanboys got burned, they still eagerly lined up to see the next one, and we expect nothing to be different for The Amazing Spider-Man 3. Now, if The Amazing Spider-Man 2 grossed "only" $500 or $600 million, then we might be onto something, but that would imply that the fanboy audience is really worth that much money.
