Yorgos Lanthimos is an unusual film-maker and, even by his standards, The Killing of a Sacred Deer is a very unusual film. It is certainly not to everyone's taste but the genius of the film is that it doesn't pretend to be. It is a film that is so unapologetically unique that it will be turning over in your brain for some time; whether that be with admiration or confusion.
One of the key things Lanthimos has become known for is his characters deadpan delivery of lines; they almost appear to be reading the script during the scene. It's unlike anything else out there and, although it may take many viewers out of the film, those of us who stick around for it find that this allows the emotional peaks of the film to land with such force it's hard to not feel it too.
Seemingly emotionless characters suddenly breaking that stern exterior is hard to watch and The Killing of a Sacred Deer does this brilliantly.
A truly original piece of film from a genuinely (over-used word coming up here) visionary film-maker; The Killing of a Sacred Deer is a tension filled thriller unlike anything you've ever seen. It is memorable one way or the other.
